The History of Hillcrest, California

At first, Hillcrest was a mesa covered in chaparral. The Kumeyaay Indians lived in many villages located around the San Diego area. The establishment of the neighboring San Diego Mission during Spanish colonization marked the beginning of the state’s twenty-nine missions in California. San Diego history is embodied in Old Town, located just down the hill, and Presidio Park in Mission Hills.

Mary Kearney received a deed for the property that would eventually become Hillcrest from the city in 1870. That land was acquired by real estate developers Arnold and D. Choate in 1871. George Hill, a wealthy railroad tycoon, then purchased the land. The area was fully developed by 1920, having started with real estate development in 1910. Hillcrest was regarded as a suburban shopping district for San Diego’s downtown in the 1920s and 1930s.

Driven by the Panama-California Exposition of 1915 and constructed by John D. Spreckels, the Class 1 streetcars and the extensive San Diego public transit system connected many neighborhoods, including Hillcrest, in the 1910s. This neighborhood saw these streetcars as a constant until their retirement in 1939.

The Hillcrest Women’s Association, a collective of female shopkeepers in the area, donated the “HILLCREST” lighted sign that was first placed at the intersection of University and Fifth Avenue in 1940. Pictures from around 1930 show a sign akin to this one. It was demolished and rebuilt in 1984 after deteriorating. The sign was retrofitted in 2023 from white to color lighting in 16 million hues with pre-programmed shows for various events and holidays. On February 21, 2023, the sign was relit in the Mardi Gras colors of purple, gold, and green.

Hillcrest was left with an aging population and infrastructure following World War II.

In Hillcrest, gays and lesbians started establishing organizations, businesses, and homes in the 1970s.
