The History of Chicago, Illinois

In American political, cultural, and economic history, Chicago has been crucial. Chicago has been the largest city in the Midwest since the 1880 census and has been one of the region’s most important metropolises since the 1850s. The earliest accounts of the region date back to the late 17th century, when French explorers, missionaries, and fur traders arrived and interacted with the local Pottawatomie Native Americans. With a home at the mouth of the Chicago River in the late 1700s, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable was the region’s first permanent non-native settler. A U.S. Army fort and a few small settlements existed, but in 1812, the soldiers and settlers were all driven out. Northern businessmen founded the modern city in 1837, and it expanded quickly due to real estate speculation and the realization that it held a dominant position in the developing inland transportation network, which was centered on railroads and lake traffic and controlled access from the Great Lakes into the Mississippi River basin.

The city expanded rapidly in spite of a fire that destroyed the Central Business District in 1871. It became the rail hub of the country as well as the preeminent Midwestern hub for manufacturing, business, finance, higher education, broadcasting, sports, jazz, and high culture. German, Irish, and Scandinavian immigrants were drawn to the city initially, followed by Jews, Czechs, Poles, and Italians between the 1890s and 1914. Everybody was engrossed in the city’s formidable political apparatus situated in wards. Many became members of militant labor unions, and Chicago gained notoriety for its brutal strikes but also for its high pay.

As part of the Great Migration, a sizable number of African Americans left the South during World War I. After 1910, Mexican immigrants began to arrive, followed by Puerto Ricans in 1945. After 1945, the Cook County suburbs expanded quickly, but the Democratic party apparatus maintained control over both the city and the suburbs, particularly under mayor Richard J. Daley, who also served as the Cook County Democratic Party chairman. The majority of the steel mills, factories, and stockyards were shut down by deindustrialization in 1970, but the city’s status as a hub for commerce and transportation remained. It emphasized its service roles in higher education, medicine, and tourism more and more. Leaders like Adlai Stevenson in the 1950s, Stephen A. Douglas in the 1850s, and Barack Obama in more recent times derived their political foundation from this city.
