A Brief History of Austin, Texas

In 1839, the independent Republic of Texas chose Waterloo, a small village on a remote stretch of land near the Colorado River, as its permanent capital. The decision to rename this small isolated community after Stephen F. Austin sparked much debate. Many prominent power brokers, including Sam Houston, opposed Austin as the capital, fearing that it would be vulnerable to attack by both Indian tribes and the Mexican Army, which Texans were still fighting.

After a three-year hiatus during which the capital was temporarily relocated to Houston, Austin reclaimed the title in 1846 and saw three different nations govern its people in less than two decades: the Republic of Texas, the United States, and the Confederacy.

Following the Civil War, Reconstruction gave Austinites their first taste of economic prosperity. In 1871, the Houston and Texas Central Railway granted the town its first railroad connection, ushering in a new era and making Austin a vital trade and commerce center in the Lone Star State. With this development, the population more than doubled as new and more modern buildings were constructed throughout the thriving capital.

Of all these new structures, one stood out as the city’s most iconic building. The Texas State Capitol, with its Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, has dominated the Austin skyline since it was completed in 1888. It is more than 300 feet taller than its counterpart in Washington, DC, symbolizing the importance of state government in the city’s economy.

During the same decade, Austinites’ collective fortunes improved with the establishment of the University of Texas (later the University of Texas at Austin). With the first classes in 1883, the school drew the best and brightest from across the state. Austin’s second most recognizable landmark, the Main Building (also known as “The Tower”), was completed in 1937.

With a world-class university, Austin now boasts a highly educated workforce that attracts employers from all over the country. With its knowledgeable population, Austin has become the Silicon Valley of the South, with offices established by Fortune 500 companies such as Texas Instruments, Apple, Dell, eBay, Google, IBM, and Intel.

Obviously, the capital’s special bond with Lyndon Baines Johnson—possibly the most influential and prosperous politician of the 20th century—paid off handsomely. Completed in 1941, the Marshall Ford Dam (later renamed the Mansfield Dam) provided Austin residents with hydroelectricity from the Colorado River. First aircraft took off from Bergstrom Air Force Base a year later; for almost 50 years, it was an essential component of Strategic Air Command (SAC).

Austin never really embraced the theory of widespread resistance against the civil rights movement after the historic Brown v. Board of Education case because of its unique history and culture from most southern cities and towns. Actually, there were no violent incidents when UT Austin admitted its first African-American students in 1956.

Imagine that same progressive attitude still exists today on Austin’s streets. Under the informal motto “Keep Austin Weird,” locally run businesses are let to thrive while residents and visitors alike keep swarming Sixth Street for some of the best food and entertainment. You also have to mention the city’s renowned music scene, where live performers carry on the tradition started by unforgettable events like Austin City Limits.
